Some Very Useful Crochet Abbreviations

You'll find that most crochet patterns and books have a legend for the terms used, however, for those times when it isn't included, here's our list of common crochet abbreviations with their meaning:

* = Repeat instructions following single asterisk as directed

** = Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

( ) = Alternate instructions

[ ] = Repeat a series of instructions given inside brackets

= inches

alt = alternate

beg = beginning

bet = between

BL = Back Loop, block, or bobble, depending on the context

BP = Back Post

BPdc = Back Post double crochet

BPsc = Back Post single crochet

BPtr = Back Post treble crochet

btw = between

CC = contrasting colour

ch(s) = chain(s)

ch-sp = chain space

cl = cluster

cm = centimetre

cont = continue

dec = decrease

dtr = double treble crochet

ea - each

esc = extended single crochet

eesc = extra extended single crochet

esk = edge Solomon's knot

est = established

inc = increase

incl = include / including / inclusive

lp(s) = loop(s)

m = meter; also mesh

MC = main colour

mm = millimetre

msk = main Solomon's knot

oz = ounce/s

opp = opposite
